5 Tips for speaking English on the phone at work

ที่ทำงาน หลายๆ คนเวลาคุยโทรศัพท์กับชาวต่างชาติ มักจะมีปัญหากับการสื่อสาร ไม่ว่าจะเรื่องตื่นเต้น ฟังไม่ออก ฟังไม่รู้เรื่อง เค้าพูดเร็วเหลือเกิน ก็เลยจะสรุป หลักการ 5 อย่างข้างล่างนี้ เพื่อนำไปลองใช้ดูนะ

1. Take notes beforehand (จดโน๊ต ล่วงหน้า)

บางทีก่อนจะยกหู โทรศัพท์ไปหาชาวต่างชาติ ไม่ว่าจะเรื่องใดก็ตาม ก็ควรจะจดโน๊ตคร่าวๆ ดูก่อน ถ้าเรื่องยากก็อาจจะต้องจดมากหน่อย จดเพื่ออะไร เพื่อเรียงลำดับความว่าเราจะพูดอะไรก่อนหลัง เพื่อให้แน่ใจว่า เราได้สอบถาม หรือ คุยครบทุกเรื่อง ทั้งนี้ทำแบบนี้แล้ว ทำให้งานมีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้นด้วย

2. Prepare some sentences if you need to be more convincing or professional (เตรียมประโยคบ้างถ้าต้องการให้ฟังดูน่าเชื่อถือ หรือ ดูเหมือนมืออาชีพ)

บางที่เรื่องที่เราจะถาม หรือขอความช่วยเหลือนั้น มันอาจจะซับซ้อน หรือ บางที่เราต้องคุยกับต่างชาติที่มีอาวุโสกว่า ถ้าอยากให้การพูดมันลื่นไหล หรือ ฟังดูน่าเขื่อถือ หรือแม้แต่ให้ดูเหมือนเราทำงานดูดี การเตรียมประโยคล่วงหน้า คร่าวๆ ซ่อมในใจ เล็กๆ น้อยๆ ก่อนพูดจริง ก็จะช่วยให้เรา มีการพูดที่ดีขึ้น ไม่ลนลาน อีกทั้งทำให้เรามั่นใจอีกด้วย

3. Take notes while you’re listening to (จดบันทึกระหว่างฟัง)

บางทีเวลาเราคุยเสร็จแล้วกลับลืมคำตอบที่ได้ถามไป เนื่องจากอาจจะถามไปมากมาย ดังนั้น พยายามจดบันทึกสิ่งที่เราได้มาจากการสอบถามของเรา เพื่อทำให้แน่ใจว่า ไม่มีอะไรตกหล่น

4. Make sure you understand (ทำให้แน่ใจเราเข้าใจ)

ปัญหาเรื่องสำเนียงของชาวต่างชาติ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการพูดภาษาอังกฤษโดยคนจีน คนอินเดีย เวียดนาม หรือฝรั่งเอง คนไทยส่วนใหญ่ มีปัญหาเรื่องการฟัง มากพอๆ กันการพูด เนื่องจากไม่คุ้นเคยกับสำเนียงที่ถูกต้อง ดังนั้น เราอาจจะจับใจความไม่ถูกต้อง 100 % วิธีการที่ดีที่สุดคือ การทวนสิ่งที่เราคิดว่าเราเข้าใจ เพื่อการสื่อสารที่ครบถ้วนสมบูรณ์ ถึงแม้ว่าในบางครั้งเราอาจจะต้อง พูด I’m sorry/ Could you repeat that again? / Pardon/ I did not quite catch the last sentence /could you say that again? และอื่นๆ บ่อยครั้ง ไม่ต้องกลัวว่าเค้าจะรำคาญ เนื่องจากคนไทยมีนิสัยขี้เกรงใจ

รู้มั้ยว่า กับฝรั่ง การที่เราเสเสร้งแกล้ง เข้าใจ โดยการ สมมุติ ทึกทักเอา แล้วเนื้อหาสาระที่เราได้รับไม่ตรงกับสิ่งที่เค้าสื่อออกมา ฝรั่งจะไม่ชอบอาการแบบนี้ ดังนั้น อย่ากลัวที่จะขอให้เค้าพูดให้อีกครั้งหนึ่ง (แต่อย่ามากเกินไปนะ)

5. Sum Up issues (สรุปประเด็น)

ก่อนวางสาย คุณอาจจะ สรุปสั้นๆ สิ่งที่เราเข้าใจทั้งหมด อาจจะเพิ่มเติมไปว่าคุณจะทำอะไร จากสิ่งที่คุณได้คำตอบไป แล้วคุณอาจจะปิดท้ายด้วย การขอบคุณ อย่างสุภาพ

• That’s a good point
• Yes, I see what you mean.
• Yes, I could go along with that.
• I don’t disagree.

การแสดงการไม่เห็นด้วย (Disagreement)

• I’m afraid I don’t see your point.
• Seriously, I don’t get your point.
• Sorry, I do not agree on that.
• I totally disagree with you.
• I can’t agree with you on that.
• I don’t think that’s true, actually.
• Do you really/honestly think so?
• I don’t see what you’re getting at.

ถามถึงความคิดเห็น (Asking for comment)

• Would you like to add something?
• Do you have any comments?
• Is there anything you’d like to say/add?
• Do you think so? / Do you really think so?
• What do you think? / What do you reckon?

ขัดจังหวะ (Interrupting)

• Can/Could I butt in here?
• Can I interrupt? / Could I interrupt you here?
• Can I say something?
• Could I add something here?
• Could จะสุภาพกว่า Can

การทวนซ้ำ (Repeating)

• Let me put it this way.
• What I was trying to say was…/ What I was trying to say was that…

เมื่อมีความเข้าใจผิด (Misunderstanding)

• I don’t think you got what I was saying.
• I think you’ve got the wrong idea.
• I think you might misunderstand.
• I think you misunderstand the whole idea.
